I enjoy your Dragon Fight piece, lots of detail! Richard

I see you came to the chat room (which is on IRC,) and now I remember a comment from you about a dragon (that I also commented on,) that just did not seem relevant for my comment page, so I deleted it. I do not really like calling people I do not know in person, but I would be open to meet an Elfwood artist if we were in the same area at once. The best way to reach me is comments, emailing me on my page, the chat room or IM/IRC."
| 27 Apr 2013 | Bill Gage | Loading...You have a really nice gallery. Thank you for including closeup of some of your paintings. I am trying to move towards using color more in my work so it is nice to see what can be done with different mediums. What would you say is the medium you like most? Watercolor, Acrylic, Colored Pencils? David N Melik replies: "You have a nice gallery too, and it would be fun to see more colour work by you.
I have usually heard pigments referred to as ’media;’ maybe the paper is the ’medium,’ or that is a term for all of an art itself (like ’the medium of art;’ ’the medium of film/tv,’ etc.,) but do not take my word.
I like watercolour/gouache, and my high school art teacher said coloured pencils are, technically, dry watercolour, both of which seem to work fine with pastels (i.e., chalk.) and I like oil paint equally... I also like clay & plasticine, polymer ’clay,’ wood, and to some extent other sculpture media such as metal, but not melting it besides soldering (I wish I could try metal/bronze, stone/marble, but never found a place to before I focused on other academic subjects.) I have used other colour media and it seems fine, and I also do a bit of computer art (though having a bit of disdain for it except for in the Demoscene, which I am part of,) sometimes mixed with traditional (only one such piece in my SFF, ’other works’ areas each.) I got used to acrylics, but they can be a pain by ruining work and brushes because of how they dry, so I would not normally use them unless I could not have enough ventilation, and I would not recommend them to anyone before they try oil paint.
Some artists think acrylics are better, except if you ever stop to think, or take a break, during such a piece, you better clean your brushes thoroughly or they may be ruined... and, though it has been years since I actually painted (though I have been working on pastel pieces,) if I recall, it may even be hard to completely wash brushes that you have used with acrylics unless you are rinsing them almost every few seconds... that may just be my memory of frustration with it many years ago, but just try it and see--I suspect brushes may just last longer with oils, maybe unless you are extremely careful (maybe after ruining one or more brushes.) The nice thing about acrylics is they are diluted with water, so they are like watercolours and like oils (acrylics being petroleum-based, I think.) So instead of mixing all those mediums for oil paint (mineral spirits, linseed oil) you know what the consistency is going to be with the tone... personally, it does not make much of a difference; it seems a bit easier to get used to mediums for oils than deal with the time limit of acrylics. I do not know if the range of pigment hues is about the same or if one type is better. They all work fine for me now."
